(IntegrityTimes.com) – While Vice President Kamala Harris has already garnered enough Democratic delegates to become the party’s nominee, the process is still ongoing. In the meantime, however, many are asking about what her policies are. Some may recall that Harris ran in the Democratic primary for the 2020 election, but her campaign never managed to get her off the ground. She also served as District Attorney in San Francisco from 2004 to 2011, California’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2017 and then Senator before her tenure as vice president to Joe Biden.
Some have criticized Harris for actions she took in previous positions, but others say that some of her views have changed and that given the chance she might not support her earlier decisions. While she has generally been considered a center-left politician, many contend that she has become increasingly progressive over the years. Her work as district attorney and attorney general in particular have earned her criticism from more progressive voters. However, her support of the Marijuana Justice Act as well as endorsement of measures to reduce the prison population and end solitary confinement seem to signal a reversal in her earlier opinions.
Currently Harris seems to be appealing to both moderates and progressives on key issues like the economy, climate change, and abortion. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and abortion laws now falling under state control rather than federal, the issue has improbably become even more contentious. Some voters rate abortion access as the single most important issue in deciding which candidates to support. Harris has been a consistently staunch supporter of abortion and generally opposes any restrictions. She is also the first Vice President to ever visit an abortion clinic.
Harris has backed policies that promote renewable energy and advocated for higher corporate taxes. She has consistently showed support for the LGBTQ+ community, and she has advocated for drug pricing controls. Over the years she has criticized rightwing border policies and called for the reform in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On most issues Harris is in agreement with Democrat party policy, although some of her viewpoints have changed over the years to get to this point.
