(IntegrityTimes.com) – A parent’s worst nightmare came true for Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield and his ex-wife Caterina Fake after their daughter went missing on April 21.
Sixteen-year-old Mint Butterfield was reported missing by her mother on April 22 and was last seen around 10 p.m. the night before in Bolinas, California, according to a spokesperson from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. The girl was living with her mother when she left home and never returned. The spokesperson, Deputy Jose Suarez, wrote in a statement that she was also enrolled in a private boarding school near Napa.
The statement described the outfit the girl was wearing at the time of her disappearance, noting that she also could be “carrying a gray suitcase.” A San Francisco news outlet revealed that Mint Butterfield frequented a particularly dangerous downtown Tenderloin District. She has struggled with substance abuse and once threatened suicide. She identifies as a non-binary person and prefers to be referred to as “they/them.” The sheriff’s office said that she left a note at her mother’s home before she ran away. Fake immediately called the police after finding the letter and informed them that she may have set out for the Tenderloin. A missing poster with Mint Butterfield’s photo was shared by journalist Yashar Ali, which quickly went viral on social media.
The girl’s parents were married for six years before divorcing in 2007 when she was born. Stewart Butterfield is worth nearly $1.6 billion, partly due to his co-founding the messaging app. He also co-founded Flickr with Fake, which they sold to Yahoo! for close to $30 million in 2005. In 2020, Butterfield married entrepreneur Jennifer Rubio and moved to Colorado. They share two children and also own several homes in New York.
A man was arrested after Mint Butterfield was found in the back of a van.
