(IntegrityTimes.com) – A not yet abandoned cultural artifact of men’s clubs is the humorous “roast” of an honored guest. While they have expanded out of private clubs, and come to include women as well, the time-honored tradition of making fun of the guest of honor is the entire point of the events.
Netflix’s The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady streamed live on Sunday May 5, 2024, as part of their “Netflix is a Joke” comedy festival in Los Angeles, California. Tom Brady is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time and played for the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his 23 years with the NFL.
During a roast, it is common for comedians and guests of any profession to give short speeches honoring the guest with brutally honest humor. The guest of honor and everyone else are meant to take it all in as an affectionate ribbing. However, the speakers are under no constraint to limit their comments to the roast’s honoree. Since the special aired, many moments featuring zingers directed at participants and guests have gone viral on social media.
One such joking remark was made by Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots. He directed his comment to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that if he were watching to know that Kraft wanting his ring back from him. For those in the know, that was immediately hilarious. However, for those who are younger or who do not follow sports that seemed to be confusing. Kraft was referencing an incident in 2005.
At an event in Saint Petersburg that year, Kraft met with Putin and allowed him to try on his championship ring. The ring is encrusted with 4.94-carats of diamonds and valued at about $25,000, although they are rare, and their memorabilia value could be much higher. When Kraft extended his hand to receive it back, Putin allegedly just slipped it into his pocket. The Russian government has maintained that the ring was a gift, and Kraft was pressured by the U.S. government to make a public statement supporting that story. Kraft has since made negative remarks about the situation, while Putin claims to not remember either Kraft or the ring itself.
