(IntegrityTimes.com) – On Saturday, July 13, a 20-year-old man attempted to assassinate former president Trump at his campaign rally in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He failed, and Trump walked away missing part of one ear.
Americans have been reacting to the shocking incident in different ways ever since. Some have voiced disappointment that Trump was not killed and have expressed those views using online accounts attached to their real names or workplaces. Many are now holding those people to account for their public support of political violence.
One person unhappy that assassination didn’t remove the former president from the upcoming 2024 election is Tyler Barbieri. He works as an analyst in New York City’s Office of Management and Budget. Amid online backlash for his support of political murder, Barbieri deleted the post and removed his LinkedIn account. He was then suspended from his job although some are still calling for his termination. Among them is Staten Island Republican Party chairman and state Assemblyman Michael Tannousis who commented that a person being paid by taxpayer funding should have better judgement.
A spokesperson for Mayor Adams office commented on the situation indicating that Barbieri does not speak for the mayor and added that he has apologized and acknowledged his mistake. The day after the attempt on Donald Trump’s life, Mayor Adams held a press conference denouncing hate speech and political violence. He urged people to settle their differences at the ballot box rather than with bullets.
Adams call for people to cool the heated political rhetoric may have fallen on deaf ears. Many accounts, both anonymous and public, have made remarks similar to Barbieri’s. Outraged, conservatives have been highlighting the murderous comments and even reporting the posts to the commenter’s employers. Some businesses have announced that they have fired workers reported for public support of political assassination. This sort of “cancellation” has been a common weapon for leftists for years, but now it is being wielded by the right. While Barbieri is a government employee, many others who are not so comfortable may also be punished for their open approval of political violence.
