Fanni Willis Under Fire Over Campaign Donation Sources

(IntegrityTimes.com) – Controversial District Attorney for Fulton County, Georgia, Fani Willis, is under scrutiny again as it is discovered she received campaign donations from Shelitha Robertson.

Robertson was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. On Friday June 7 Robertson was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison, followed by three years supervision. She has been in custody since she was convicted in December and the six months, she’s spent in custody will count towards her sentence.

62-year-old Shelitha Robertson is a former Atlanta city attorney, a former police officer, and she and her daughter hosted a podcast called ‘Mommy and Me”. She also unsuccessfully ran for the Georgia House of Representatives in 2015 and for the Atlanta Judicial Circuit in 2010. She claimed roughly $15 million in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) during the pandemic to support four businesses she owned. However, the Department of Justice found that she had falsely inflated the average monthly payroll as well as the number of employees on her loan applications.

Robertson indulged in lavish spending with her PPP loan money. She bought a 10-carat diamond ring and a Rolls Royce. She also made money transfers to relatives and to disbarred attorney Chandra Norton who has been named her co-conspirator. The PPP program’s purpose was to provide emergency financial assistance, but it has been plagued with fraud from the start. Loan application fraud, kickback schemes, fraudulent loan forgiveness and identity theft have all been associated with the PPP loans. There is increasing interest in auditing loans that have already been approved and tightening security checks for any future loans.

Fani Willis in the meantime faces criticism for accepting the $1,000 donation that Robertson made to her campaign. Willis is the District Attorney leading the investigation into alleged election interference by former President Donald Trump and his allies in 2020. Trump’s legal team has already attempted to have her removed from the case due to her relationship with special prosecutor, Nathan Wade. While that did not succeed, the case is currently being delayed as the Georgia Court of Appeals reviews that decision. Willis is also being investigated for possible violations of Georgia’s campaign finance laws.
