BrucePac has expanded its recall of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products due to potential listeria contamination, now involving almost 12 million pounds. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) initiated this measure, impacting major retailers such as Costco, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and even schools. While no illnesses have been reported, listeriosis poses a significant threat, particularly to those who are more vulnerable.

The recall includes products processed at BrucePac’s plant in Durant, Oklahoma. FSIS discovered the contamination through routine testing. Affected items were produced from May 31 to October 8, 2023, bearing establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” under the USDA mark of inspection. With such a broad impact, consumers should be vigilant in identifying these products.

Safety Measures and Consumer Advice

“We are working closely with USDA to ensure that all necessary actions are taken to ensure a safe food supply,” BrucePac stated. They have halted production until safety can be assured. Consumers are advised to throw away or return recalled products to retailers for a refund.

The risk of listeria is particularly severe for high-risk groups such as pregnant individuals, newborns, adults over 65, and those with compromised immune systems. Nearly 1,600 cases are reported annually, leading to about 260 deaths. The CDC advises these groups to avoid certain deli meats unless heated to 165°F.
