Oklahoma GOP Censures Senator Lankford

(IntegrityTimes.com) – A Senate border security bill shrouded in secrecy has been a hot topic of discussion over the last several weeks. A leaked draft of the bill caused outrage among many Senate Republicans who were not privy to the details. Oklahoma Senator James Lankford is one of the few Republicans in the loop. He has been working on the bill with Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy and Arizona Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

Lankford was formally censured by the Oklahoma GOP State Committee on January 28. The Party’s resolution condemned Lankford for supporting a bill that allegedly contains language that would allow 5,000 illegal migrants to cross the border into the United States each day. According to media reports, 80 percent of that threshold must be met every day for a week before the president can act. The resolution also rebuked Lankford for going along with a plan that would expedite citizenship for illegal migrants, putting them ahead of immigrants who legally came to the United States.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, Lankford said that the goal was to finalize the language of the bill so that the other Senators and the public could read it. He said that “internet rumors” have fueled the opposition to the bill, adding, “It would be absolutely absurd for me to agree to 5,000 people a day.” Lankford claimed that the bill was meant to completely stop illegal migrants from coming into the country, but many are wondering why President Biden would agree to such a measure since he has allowed unfettered illegal migration for three years straight.

Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott appeared for an interview after Lankford. He said that the legislation was completely unnecessary and argued that Biden “doesn’t need any of this to secure the border.” He said that he does not understand why he and other Senators have not had access to the bill but is certain that he will not support it. Former President Trump made clear on January 29 that there are laws already on the books that would stop the massive influx of illegal migrants, and that no new legislation is needed.
