Family of Suspect Rex Heuermann Clings to Disturbing Evidence

(IntegrityTimes.com) – The family of suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann still possessed a grisly album of crime scene photos shortly before New York police returned to their Long Island home.

According to a source with knowledge of the incident, the photo album was seen on a kitchen table. The scrapbook contained a collection of crime scene photos, which had been taken by California detective Jack Huddleston. Asa Ellerup, Heuermann’s estranged wife, lives at the property with their two adult children. Bob Macedonio, Ellerup’s lawyer, denied knowledge of the book.

Heuermann was arrested in July 2022 and charged with a fourth murder in January 2024. The suspect has pleaded not guilty to three charges of first-degree murder and another three charges of second-degree murder for the deaths of Amber Costello, 27, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, and Megan Waterman, 22. The fourth victim believed to have been murdered by Heuermann was Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25. The suspect’s alleged victims were among 11 victims whose bodies washed up along Long Island’s coastline between 2009 and 2011. The source claimed that the gruesome photo album had already been inventoried by investigators during the initial search of the residence before it was returned to Heuermann’s family.

Detectives have discovered that Heuermann regularly carried out internet searches for extreme imagery. Their search of an email account Heurmann had using the pseudonym “Thomas Hawk” and a burner phone produced dozens of search items that included terms fetishizing 10-year-old girls, girls with beaten faces and tortured redheads. Over 200 searches for the Gilgo Beach case and other known serial killers were also found.

The suspect’s family explained the presence of the photo album by claiming that they had been busy tidying and reorganizing the living room. It is not known for sure whether they were made aware of the investigators’ visit in advance. In addition to the four prostitutes Heuermann is suspected of killing, detectives are also investigating the suspect’s possible links to body parts that could not be linked to the identified victims. The return to the property was reportedly prompted by a police search of woods close to Manorville, roughly 40 miles away. In a previous search of the property in July 2023 a gun vault was found, which contained over 300 firearms. The locations where Heuermann’s alleged victims were killed are not currently known.
