(IntegrityTimes.com) – On Thursday May 23, 2024, former president Trump held a rally in the South Bronx during a break in his Manhattan hush money trial.
The event went surprising well for a diverse area so staunchly Democrat where 80% of voters supported President Biden in the 2020 election. Ahead of the rally, progressive New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized the event during an interview on a local news program. She claimed that most of the attendees were likely to be “out-of-towners” and it would just be a cynical fund-raising opportunity for the former president.
However, another story emerged when “Fox & Friends Weekend” co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy conducted on the street interviews before the event. Locals seemed to see Trump’s visit to their area as a sign of respect, and some indicated they believed he was “for the little man”. President of New York’s Hispanic Clergy Association, Reverend Ruben Diaz Sr. expressed frustration with the Democrat party. While a lifelong Democrat himself, he suggested many are feeling used and abused by the party. Diaz brought up rampant crime, saying that children and seniors are not safe on the streets.
On the day of the Trump rally many attendees had criticism for Ocasio-Cortez. One unidentified man suggested she stay out of the Bronx as everyone there is for Trump. Another woman had a different idea, saying Ocasio-Cortez should come and see for herself the hardships people are facing there. Another attendee remarked on how much lower fuel prices were when Donald Trump was president, while others angrily referenced Biden’s infamous comment that people who weren’t sure who to vote for “ain’t black”.
The event drew more than 25,000 attendees, as well as protestors representing the Bronx Democratic Party. The native New Yorker former president spent some time discussing the city and its cultural importance while also calling it “a city in decline”. However, rather than drawing offense, Trump’s promises to restore the city and America to former glory seemed to resonate with the crowd. Bronx resident 50-year-old Muhammad Ali says at this moment the U.S. needs a patriotic president, and he believes that Trump is the more patriotic choice in the upcoming presidential election.
