(IntegrityTimes.com) – A 60-year-old man named Richard Sanchez was shot and killed on a bus in Denver, Colorado on January 27, following a “verbal exchange” with a 13-year-old boy. According to police, the boy was upset that Sanchez was blocking the aisle with his leg. As the verbal argument progressed, the boy pulled out a gun and shot Sanchez multiple times. Police arrived on the scene at around 6:41 p.m., and Sanchez was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Another person suffered minor injuries during the shooting but did not require medical attention. The boy was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder on February 1, but his name was not released to the public due to his juvenile status.
Democrats argue that new laws would prevent criminals from killing others with firearms. They focus on the gun rather than the person who pulled the trigger. Republicans argue that criminals do not follow the laws already on the books. They focus on how new laws would only restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. Many cities and states with the most restrictive gun laws have the highest rates of violent crime, especially crimes committed with firearms.
In January, lawmakers in Colorado introduced new so-called “gun reform” legislation to pile on various other restrictive laws already in place. The state’s gun-free zones include public transportation, even for concealed-carry permit holders. Two separate gun laws, one of which is a federal statute, were broken by the 13-year-old boy. This raises the question of why lawmakers believe that more laws would prevent criminals from doing criminal things. Some might argue that the gun-free zone law in Colorado restricts lawful gun owners from protecting themselves in similar situations. Restricting the rights of lawful gun owners would not have prevented the killing of Sanchez. Lawful and responsible gun owners know how to safely store firearms and prevent children from accessing them.
